Responding to Fun Home and Graphic Novels

Image
Graphic novels are an interesting approach to literature and books in general. I find it somewhat weird as I feel that an important part of books is that the reader creates his/her own images in their mind when reading. So I wonder why a writer would necessarily take this away and instill their own images on the reader. After reading Fun Home I found it to be an entertaining read and the use of images in sort of a comic. The way images were used in this graphic novel showed a lot of emotion that would otherwise be somewhat difficult to show using words. For example in the image below just the small changes in facial expressions show the awkwardness during this car ride. In Fun Home I found that the only way that the daughter could talk with her father was always through literature and was some of the little common ground that had with each other. This is shown a lot throughout the story as there conversations and interactions with each other always short and their relati...

The Model Process

Image
Warhammer 40K is one of the hobbies I do when I have time. The process to me is interesting and creative to me as you start with only a few pieces of plastic but at the end of the process, it is a detailed and colorful model. Plastic bits out of the box In the beginning, it does not look like much but a bunch of plastic which I then cut each piece out using an X-Acto knife. After all the pieces are cut out and separated I then shave off any extra pieces of plastic that may be hanging off the model piece. The next step is to put all the pieces together using model glue. Built model spray painted Preparing to paint After the glue does its thing I move on to priming the model in a coat of black paint. The reason for this is so the model paint has something to stick to. I use black spray paint as my color scheme is mostly dark colors. After the primer drys, I get the paints I am using for the particular model. I start with a base coat which in this case was another bla...

Photo Stories

Image
Photo stories are stories told with photos which sounds pretty obvious but they are a little more complex than that. The writer may alter the images used to try and to convey a message they want the viewer to see. Photo stories can have little to no text accompanying the images or they can have paragraphs along with them. A photo story that I enjoyed looking at was " 12 Food Orders and the People Who Delivered Them ". This photo story shows a chain of images of delivery people in New York. A photographer named Young Jang conducted an experiment where she ordered food from a variety of restaurants and when her food was delivered she would ask to take a photo of the employee and ask a few questions relating to the customers they get. From this image alone I was able to see that they are a variety of people that are employed as delivery drivers in New York. Each image had a small amount of text with telling how old the employee was, where they are from, where they work, and...

My First Erasure Poem

Image
I found this activity to actually be quite entertaining. I will say I did find it to be somewhat of a challenge, trying to find words that work together that are all on the same page. For mine I tried to say how the advancements of technology would take hold of the world but no matter how advanced the human race gets humanity still remembers its roots. For the design I was just randomly making connections and shapes, Then I used a different color to show in what order the words should read.

Distant Reading

Image
Distant reading is taking a large body of text or database and looking at it as a whole and finding patterns within the writing. I find distant reading to be more interesting than close reading and it reveals a lot of information. This information would be very difficult to find out without the use of the Voyant tool. Voyant can be used for a variety of data including articles, lyrics, and books for example. I have used Voyant before once for the book Call of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft and I found the data to be very helpful and revealing as well. This time however I am doing a distant reading of my own blog so it will be a little weird doing a distant reading on my own writing. The first thing that I look at after entering in the data I am performing the distant reading on is the word cloud as it tends to be the thing that pops out the most. A word cloud is a great visualization as it very easy to understand. From this, I can tell that my most used words are data and time. T...

Data Visualizations

Image
Launch It visualization Data visualization is something that I have some interest in as it has a lot of design elements to it. These visualizations also attract the viewer more than just some data being presented. I take a digital tools class and we went into some data visualizations and we found some examples. The example I found to be most appealing was LAUNCH IT . This data visualization I found to be really cool. The data it is presenting is the locations you can purchase a book, at first I thought this is a lot of work just to show where you can buy a book. The book, however, is about being a designer and creating graphics and visualizations. What better way to promote your book about design than using an interactive data visualization to show where to buy said book. I played around with the LAUNCH IT for a little and it is very interactive and appealing. I think this a great example of a data visualization and also a great marketing strategy at the same ti...

Self-Tracking Project Proposal

Image
Day to Day Self-Tracking Project For my self-tracking project, I have decided to keep track of my time and what I listen to. The data points I will be using will be sleep, time spent on campus, and the amount of time I listen to podcasts. https://www.lastpodcastontheleft.com/ The ways I will be tracking these points will be through the use of my digital watch and an app. I will use the watch to help keep track of my sleep specifically as it will tell me the exact time and efficiency of my sleep.   The app I am using is one of the many we went over in class.  I am using the Ask Me Every app ( https://www.askmeevery.com/ ). The app works fine but I can't have it send questions through text unless I paid money, is probably not expensive but it sending it through email is fine for now. The other 2 data points I am able to track myself. I enter all 3 data points in using the app I mentioned. I believe the correlation I will see at the end of ...
